Indiana and Homeschoolers

First of all, we went to vote this morning. Did you? Our wait was an hour. It wasn't too bad.

While I was in line the "head" lady working the polling place came up to talk to N. She asked him how old he was and where he went to school. She was very sweet. I said, as I always do, a little sheepishly, "We homeschool." She replies, "Me, too!"

At Sunday school a few weeks ago N. got a new teacher. She raved and raved about how well behaved he was and that he was the best kid in the class. She asked where he went to school that he was so well behaved. I replied, as I always do, a little sheepishly, "We homeschool." She said, "Me, too!"

I get that a lot here. In WV when I said I homeschooled I would get this "look" and they would say, "Ohhhhhhhhhh." Here in Indiana either I meet another homeschooler or someone who's sister or neighbor or friend homeschools .

Here in Indiana, I'm PROUD to be a homeschooler. We aren't considered weird or strange. It's pretty prevalent here. And that makes it ever so much easier.

That's nice that you have such a large group of homeschoolers.

9 times out of 10 when people find out I homeschool their response is:

"Oh, I could NEVER do that."

I have no idea how to respond to that, so I always say:

"Oh, well..."

Fascinating conversationalist, I am.

I finally have you on my Google Reader! I had a different experience in WV - we had a great group of homeschool families - lots of friends to choose from. (I collected them all!) Texas has been way different - and we have been in a kind of barren phase. I'm glad you're finding a place there.
